Business as Usual: Building AFX's Two-Story Office Addition in Byron Center

FCC Construction completed a 6,000-square-foot two-story office addition and interior renovation for AFX (Airport Freight X-Change) in Byron Center, Michigan, while AFX kept its business running throughout construction.

A growing company rarely gets to pause while its building catches up. AFX (Airport Freight X-Change) in Byron Center, Michigan, needed more office and operational space to support its continued growth. It also needed that space built without shutting down the business already operating inside.

FCC Construction partnered with AFX on a 6,000-square-foot structural two-story building addition, along with an interior renovation of the existing facility.

What did FCC build for AFX?

The project added new space for the people who keep AFX moving every day. The scope included:

  • First floor: private offices and open office space arranged around a new reception area

  • Second floor: a conference room and an employee gym

  • Building renovations: a new trucker dispatch office and lounge area, with bathrooms that include showers and lockers

The finished interiors pair dark wallcovering and linear LED lighting with AFX's green branding, which carries from the open office workstations into the employee gym.

Building Inside an Occupied Facility

Renovating an occupied building is one of the harder jobs in construction. The work has to happen around people who still need a place to do theirs, and every move has to be planned around the business.

FCC coordinated and sequenced construction to minimize disruption and keep AFX operational from start to finish. The AFX team played a real part in that success. They helped navigate moves and supported the construction process throughout the project, which kept execution smooth on both sides.

Communication the Owner Could Count On

Projects in occupied buildings depend on steady communication. AFX CEO Craig Warner put it this way:

"We all are very Happy with everything you and Tim did on this project. I have said this before that we never had a project that ran so smoothly in our eyes, I know there probably were hiccups along the way, however we never knew any different. You guys just made things happen, and the communication was like everyday and never left us in the dark."

Proactive communication is central to how FCC works with owners, and it matters most when the building stays occupied during construction.

Room for What Comes Next

AFX now has new offices, a dedicated conference room, an employee gym, and an updated trucker dispatch area, all delivered while the company stayed open. The addition gives AFX the space to keep growing in the same Byron Center location it already calls home.
